Battle on Ice

USA vs Canada in the 2026 Winter Olympics

The 2026 Olympics was a success for the USA hockey teams. Both the women’s and men’s teams pulled out an amazing win when the team beat Canada for the gold medal.

Going into the game, the USA men's hockey had a challenge ahead of them since the men’s team had not won gold since the 1980 Olympics, 46 years prior to this year's Olympics. During that game, they beat the Soviet Union in Lake Placid, New York, making history by pulling off “The Miracle On Ice.”This game meant much more than a gold medal to them, wanting to repeat history by adding another win for their team.

In addition to the 46 year gold medal drought, team USA was missing a very important player. Johnny Gaudreau, and his brother Matthew, were killed by a drunk driver during a late night bike ride on the eve of their sisters wedding in 2024. He had earned a place on the team, and had expressed excitement for the 2026 Olympics. USA players hoped to not only honor their country, but also Gaudreau and his family. This game was less about winning and having the honor to be Olympic winners, but more as a way to honor the legacy of their dear teammate.

“In that final summer, John was training harder than ever, with his dad, pushing himself to be in the best shape of his life,” Gaudreau’s family said. “He was determined to earn his spot on that Olympic roster. While it breaks our hearts that John won’t be there to live out that dream, we know he will be so very present with Team USA and all of his close friends competing throughout these games.”

The game started off strong for the USA. In the first period, Matt Boldy scored a goal assisted by Auston Matthews. The USA was awarded the first power play of the game following a hooking penalty on Canada’s Shea Theodore. By the end of the first period the USA was up 1-0, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Shortly after the second period started, Jake Guentzel got penalized for holding and Charlie McAvoy for hooking. This gave Canada a five to three player advantage power play over the US. This did not matter though because USA’s goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, made incredible saves that kept USA in the lead.

“Hellebuyck cemented himself as the best netminder in the world with a gold medal game performance for the ages,” Greg Wyshynski said. “He stopped 41 of 42 shots against Canada, 27 of them coming from the slot and 17 of them coming from the inner slot. His paddle save on Devon Toews on a point-blank chance was the best stop by a goalie in the tournament. His breakaway stop on Macklin Celebrini was equally clutch.”

Shortly after Hellebuyck’s luck ran out with Canada’s Cale Makar, he came back and scored a goal to tie the game. Following an uneventful 3rd period, Canada and the USA went into a 3v3 overtime, which ended with an early goal from Jack Hughes, finaling allowing the USA to win gold for the first time since 1980.

“This is all about our country right now,” Hughes said. “I love the USA, I love my teammates … the USA hockey brotherhood is so strong. I’m so proud to be American tonight.”

USA rushed the ice following Hughes' goal to celebrate the win. Posing for a photo with freshly knocked out teeth, Hughes painted the perfect picture of the dedication and fearlessness of Olympic athletes. In the customary team photo, Gaudreau’s jersey was displayed in the front row next to his two children, who were included to represent his legacy in USA hockey.

The Canada and USA hockey rivalry has been in favor of Canada from the very beginning, but with rich new American talent, USA is starting to back up their big talk. The 2026 Winter Olympics is just the start of the USA's new generation of hockey players, and proves to Canada that the USA can dominate in hockey from the men's and women's side. This win will add fuel to the fire for the annual 4-Nations tournament, where USA and Canada will most likely meet again.
