Australia's Social Media Ban

Australia has enacted a nationwide ban preventing children under 16 from accessing social media platforms. This is due to concerns about online harm, excessive screentime, cyberbullying and minor’s mental health. The law relies on age-verification technology, which some argue may be unreliable and could push teens towards riskier online platforms. Most supporters of this ban are government leaders and some parents, who view the ban as a necessary safety measure. Those not in favor of this ban worry it can limit connection and socialization, and argue it takes away parents’ ability to teach their children about how to be responsible online.

There are many different responses from teens in Australia. Some teens living in more rural areas say that social media is important for staying connected with long-distance friends, while others feel the ban makes being online feel more safe. The government continues to defend the ban despite legal challenges and international criticism, and the nation is now adjusting as families, schools and companies navigate these new rules.
