The Florida Junior Classical League (FJCL) State Latin Forum is the time for Latin and Greek students to challenge themselves academically and bond with their teammates. This year, the 76th annual forum was held at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel from March 27–29. Maclay’s crew of 40 middle and upper school students were selected based on their performance at the February regionals.

Students, sponsors and parent chaperons departed from Maclay on March 26 at 8:30 a.m. After stopping at the Oaks Mall in Gainesville for lunch, they visited Universal Studios Florida. Students split into groups and enjoyed the rides until the park closed. Upon arriving at the hotel, students attended a fellowship, where sponsors announced important information.

“I really enjoy traveling with my teammates because we’re all friends,” sophomore Lily Smith said. “All of them are a pleasure to travel with not only because there’s a sense of belonging in each friend group, but there’s a shared desire and passion for learning.”

The Marauders spent the next day preparing for their competitive events. While many students participated only in academic tests, some designed creative projects—costumes, declamations, dramatic interpretations or orations. The opening assembly was held in the evening, and students dressed in purple and gold, along with a toga, to demonstrate the spirit of Ancient Rome. Certamen, a quiz-bowl style Latin event, was held that night after the assembly.

The academic tests and creatives’ judgement were held around 8 a.m. on March 27. After a 90-minute testing period, students could score themselves using answer sheets. Certamen continued throughout the day, and Maclay’s navis (level one) and intermediate (level two) teams each placed 11th and ninth. Many school chapters of FJCL organized a student-run bazaar in the afternoon. Other entertainment events included marathon, impromptu art, toga war, karaoke, agon and dance.

“My favorite part about Latin is the genuine excitement that people bring to forums,” Smith said. “This year I focused more on the creative and the social aspects of the Latin forum. I met some incredible people this year, and I feel like I’m gaining some wonderful, lasting relationships.”

On the following day at 10 a.m., all FJCL members gathered for an awards ceremony. Marauders secured trophies and ribbons in both academics and creatives. Among them was eighth grader Nate Tackas who placed first in 2D non-graphic art and freshman Vivi Lemmon who placed first in phrases, mottoes, abbreviations and quotations (PMAQ). Maclay’s junior and senior divisions each placed fourth and 17th in overall sweepstakes.

“I just spent a lot of time practicing and making lots of flash cards,” Lemmon said. “I still feel like I could’ve done possibly better, but I’m really proud of myself.”
