Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, is an annual celebration of romantic relationships, friendships, love and affection. The holiday originated from ancient Christian and Roman culture, honoring St. Valentine or the Feast of Valentine. Today, many people celebrate Valentine’s Day by sending handmade cards or valentines, going on romantic dates, sending gifts like chocolate or flowers or even gifting expensive items such as jewelry. Though some view the holiday as tacky, Valentine’s Day is perfect for relaxing with a loved one and creating new romantic memories that could further benefit your relationship.

Compared to other holidays like Easter or Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day can be relaxed because couples can celebrate in numerous ways, depending on their style. Some couples may prefer a glamorous night out, while others prefer a cozy night in. While it is often seen as a day for grand romantic gestures, there is no specific script for how it should be celebrated. The purpose of Feb. 14 is to reinforce the bonds in passionate relationships because sometimes it is easy for people to feel overlooked or forgotten when things get busy.

Valentine’s Day is a great way to make new memories with your significant other. It is a time to focus on personal and authentic moments with one another. A fun night out at dinner, even if it’s something small, creates lasting memories with your person. For those in long-term relationships, Valentine’s Day just stands as a reminder to continue to prioritize each other. It is a break from a normal routine and an excuse to go out to a nice dinner together. Valentine’s Day is dedicated to making sure both people feel good and appreciated which will ultimately lead to a stronger relationship.

Many people find Valentine’s Day to be overwhelming because the commercialism of the special day tends to cause lots of anxiety and stress. However, this can be easily avoided by reminding oneself of the true meaning of the holiday. Valentine’s Day is supposed to be a joyful day, and people should not succumb to social pressures surrounding it. Some couples find cuddling up on the couch together more enjoyable than going out to dinner. Valentine’s Day is a personal holiday and celebrations will vary based on perspectives and personalities.

Rather than viewing the holiday as an obligation, couples should embrace the holiday and celebrate however they prefer. Ultimately, it is a day of love whether that be friendship, romantic or family love it is all worthy of a celebration.
