Singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter released her sixth studio album on Aug. 23. The album “Short n’ Sweet” is produced by Julian Bunetta, John Ryan, Ian Kirkpatrick and Jack Antonoff. In the first week of “Short n’ Sweet” being released, it surpassed 346.4 million streams. Carpenter explores the various emotional effects of short-term relationships throughout the tracks. The album consists of 12 songs, two being her lead singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” Each track has poetic lyrics, engaging beats and a personal connection to Carpenter herself.
The singer's first song on the album “Taste” was released alongside its highly anticipated music video featuring actress Jenna Ortega. The music video was a thoughtful twist on Meryl Streep’s iconic movie “Death Becomes Her.” The video also included references to the films “Scream,” “Psycho” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” “Taste” debuted at number two on Billboard's Hot 100 the week it was released. Many fans speculated that the song was about Carpenter's short-lived relationship with singer Shawn Mendes due to multiple lyrics referencing getting back together with an ex. Not only did these lyrics give it away but also the album's title itself “Short n’ Sweet.” Mendes and Carpenter’s dating rumors kicked off shortly after fans caught them on a date in February 2023. However, the relationship was short-lived. Mendes was spotted back together with his ex Camila Cabello only three months later.
Carpenter took a new and interesting approach with “Short n’ Sweet” because of her lack of self-deprecation throughout the album. Unlike her previous albums, she remains extraordinarily confident and charming, continuously hyping herself up. This is seen through lyrics like “Heartbreak is one thing, my ego’s another, I beg you don’t embarrass me.” Many of Carpenter’s original fans, most from her Disney Channel days on the show “Girl Meets World,” were pleased with her growth as a woman.
“Juno” is another popular hit from the album surpassing 60 million streams in just one week. The song rose immediately, thanks to its upbeat tunes and vibrant beats. Carpenter herself also jokes with fans that this is her ovulation song. Carpenter continues to explore and expose unseen sides of her, making fans feel even closer to her.
Carpenter recently just announced a “Short n’ Sweet” tour with 33 dates throughout North America and 14 throughout Europe. Her lead single “Espresso” won its first award Song of the Summer at the 2024 Video Music Awards. This album is the second-longest-running number one album of the year, according to Billboard 200. The creative lyrics and masterful expression of emotions are what makes this album so dear to fans.
