With AP exam season right around the corner, it’s time to get serious! Whether you’re aiming to pass with a three or striving for that perfect five, using your time wisely and knowing how to study can make a huge difference. This guide will provide five effective ways to help you prepare for your AP exams, covering everything from study strategies to self-care, so you can walk into your test room with confidence!

1. Review your notes and materials

None of the other tips in this guide matter if you don’t study the content itself. Revisit your notes, highlight key concepts and create flashcards to help you study and review the material. One of the most effective study techniques is active recall, which involves retrieving information from your memory by practicing questions or scribbling down everything you remember. You can also find lots of helpful videos, podcasts and games that cover your AP subject and offer a more engaging approach to studying.

2. Create a study schedule that works for you

Consistency beats cramming. Plan out your days by topic or unit, and break big subjects into manageable chunks. Each AP subject has a Course and Exam Description (CED) available on the College Board website that outlines every unit and topic. Use this to plan how many days you will need per unit! Helpful tools for this include planners, digital calendars or apps such as Notion.

3. Do practice questions

There are so many resources out there available for you to utilize. Websites such as Fiveable, Khan Academy, Albert.io and Knowt.com offer free practice questions for almost every AP subject. You can also pick up review books from Barron’s, Princeton Review or Kaplan that include both content overviews and sample questions. Practicing exam-style questions regularly helps reinforce what you’ve learned and builds test-day confidence.

4. Simulate a practice exam

Doing a fully timed practice exam gives you a realistic sense of pacing and exam format. You will be able to see which areas need more attention while also building the mental stamina you will need on test day. You can find past exams on the College Board website, and most review books include at least one full-length practice test.

5. Take care of yourself physically and mentally

Although it is super important to study rigorously, you do not want to burn out. Sleep, hydration and nutrition directly impact memory and focus. Please do not skip meals to study and especially try to avoid pulling all-nighters, as they do more harm than good. Your brain is a sponge, and it works the best when it is not dried out!

While AP exams may seem intimidating, it is important to remember that they are simply an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you have learned throughout the year. With the appropriate strategies and mindset, success on your exam is entirely within reach! By actively reviewing content, practicing exam-style questions and taking care of yourself, you will be well prepared to approach the exam with confidence and perform to the best of your ability. Best of luck!
