Why Sweatshirts are Better than Jackets

In wardrobes, both jackets and sweatshirts are common staples, but when it comes to everyday wear, there is a clear winner. A sweatshirt is a long-sleeved top, usually made from cotton or fleece, designed to provide warmth and comfort. Sweatshirts, which can range from hoodies to crewnecks, have become staples in everyday activity, evolving beyond their original athletic purpose. While jackets are good layers, sweatshirts are better for everyday use because they are more comfortable, versatile and practical.

The biggest advantage of a sweatshirt is its comfort. Clothing comfort depends on factors like insulation and breathability, meaning the fabric and make of clothing can directly affect how comfortable it is to wear. Sweatshirts are typically created using soft and flexible fabrics that are meant to be worn directly on the body, making them easy to wear all day. Jackets, however, are treated like outer layers with harder features like zippers and buttons, which can make them feel bulky and less movementable. With their comfortable fabric and flexible design, sweatshirts provide warmth without neglecting comfort and movement.

“I think sweatshirts are just more comfortable,” senior Karina Ledesma said. “Jackets are more so made to be taken off once you’re inside, but sweatshirts are worn everywhere.”

Sweatshirts also offer consumers more versatility when it comes to style. Sweatshirts can function both as a layer and the main part of an outfit. A plain crewneck can create a simple vibe, while a graphic or embroidered hoodie can become a statement piece. This range allows the garment to work for both minimalist and maximalist styles. Sweatshirts have evolved to be prominent staples in youth and streetwear culture, showing their impact on the young generation. They can be paired with any bottom and come in countless colors, designs and outfits. The variety of sweatshirt designs also allows consumers to choose features like pockets based on the look and function they want. Unlike a jacket, which is added on top of an outfit, a sweatshirt can do the same and be the piece that creates the outfit in the first place. Sweatshirts can fit any personal style.

Furthermore, sweatshirts are a more practical option because they allow for coverage and flexibility without requiring an additional layer. Hoodies can provide extra coverage around the head and neck, which can be useful for protection from the cold as well as for people who choose to cover their head for cultural reasons. Their simple pullover construction avoids the hardware parts found on jackets, such as zippers, which can get easily stuck or break. Because sweatshirts are designed to be worn throughout the day, they are accommodating to many settings. They can be a more cost-effective choice because of this design. Sweatshirts typically cost less, making them more worthwhile, because it can serve as both the outfit and the layer. Instead of spending money on an outfit and an additional jacket to wear over it, a sweatshirt can do both. Many people own three to seven sweatshirts, and wear them multiple times a week, demonstrating how accessible they are. With its ability to give coverage, work for different settings and serve as a complete top, sweatshirts offer more uses in one purchase.

“[Sweatshirts are] also easier to wear,” Ledesma said. “You don’t have to take it off and carry it around.”

Jackets do, however, have their own benefits. Jackets can be better for stronger weather like heavy rain, and zip up jackets are easier to remove. Some jackets can also create a more formal look. However, these advantages are situational and not necessarily suited to everyday wear. Not every day requires protection from extreme weather or a formal outer layer. Additionally, the significant comfort that a sweatshirt brings outweighs the minor

inconvenience of pulling it off. When the goal is having one piece of clothing that’s comfortable to wear all day, stylish enough to make an outfit and more practical on the daily, sweatshirts are the stronger choice.

Jackets have their purpose, but sweatshirts are the best everyday layer. Sweatshirts are designed to be more comfortable, versatile in style and practical enough to work in multiple situations. Jackets could be good in some situations, but for the average day, the sweatshirt wins.
