On June 12, 2026, Olivia Rodrigo released her third studio album, titled “You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love”. Coming off of the releases of “Sour” and “Guts,” this album had very high expectations. The album opens up a brand new chapter in Rodrigo’s discography. This record feels more mature and complicated than the prior, as it explores themes of love and heartbreak. In addition, the release contains Rodrigo’s first song feature, with Robert Smith from “The Cure” dueting Rodrigo in the song “What’s Wrong With Me.”

One thing Rodrigo does differently with this album is how she orders her songs. With the previous albums, Rodrigo typically just placed the songs in any order she liked. Typically, the order of songs doesn’t really matter, since most listeners just shuffle the playlist. However, with “You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love,” the songs are ordered in a specific way to tell a story. The first half of the album is meant to represent the ‘girl so in love’ part of the title. The songs capture the overwhelming highs and intense infatuation that occurs in the honeymoon phase of a relationship. Songs like “Stupid Song” and “U+Me=<3” highlight these emotions, showing how in love Rodrigo is at the start of the album. In contrast, around the halfway point of the album, a major tonal shift occurs. This shift represents the ‘you seem pretty sad’ part of the title, with issues of codependency, emotional exhaustion and insecurity being key issues throughout the last few songs. The storytelling that Rodrigo is able to pull off is impressive, and makes this album truly unique.

Aside from being an innovative album, “You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love” puts Rodrigo’s skills on full display, with the songwriting being especially notable. Although Rodrigo has always been good at conveying emotion through her lyrics, this album contains some of her best work. Songs in the early half of the album such as “Drop Dead” are fun and catchy, with wordplay and lyricism that makes the listener feel the same way Rodrigo does. Later in the album, songs like “Less” do a similar thing, garnering praise for making listeners cry because of how well the lyrics are written.

Another highlight of the album was Smith’s feature on “What’s Wrong With Me.” By itself, the song has a very nice sound, and Rodrigo’s vocals are excellent as always. In particular, Smith’s solo and part in the chorus really enhance the song, boosting it from a rather skippable song to a must-listen.

“You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love” is an excellent addition to Rodrigo’s catalog. The album has over 2.2 billion streams on Spotify, and has been very successful, with most agreeing that it has surpassed their expectations. The album marks a step forward in Rodrigo’s musical journey, leaving many excited to see what comes next.
