As the school year starts up and summer comes to a close, people begin to wonder; when should fall decorations be put out? Some people might argue as early as August, while others as late as October. Ultimately, September is the best month to put out fall decorations.
Preparation for fall season begins towards the end of summer and the beginning of the school year, and it is common for stores to put out fall-themed decorations or products during these times. Starbucks, for example, begins selling their seasonal fall menu towards the end of August. Other stores, such as American Eagle and Free People, release their fall collections to retailers from July to September, and are sold during fall months. Such early preparation could only point to the fact that September is the best month to place decorations out. It is not too early to where summer is cut short, but it is not too late to where the decorations are not appreciated.
In general, September is considered a fall month. With waiting until August is over to decorate, we allow for summer to fully come to a close before completely transitioning to fall. It is common for students to continue to travel to beaches and do similar summertime activities in the beginning of the fall semester, but seemingly such activities cease as school picks up and we head into the new season.
Similarly, pumpkin season begins in September, a common association with the fall season as well as being a popular decoration.
“For fall decorations, I like pumpkins and Halloween stuff,” freshman Lily Scott Anway said.
With Halloween coming quickly in October, excitement for the holiday arrives as early as August. Serious preparation for the holiday begins in September, where costume orders start flowing in. With many people getting ready for Halloween, and the holiday being a staple for the fall months, it is only reasonable for decoration to begin in September.
For many, September may be too early to decorate for fall. September includes the first few weeks of school where it is typically less academic-heavy. With summer weather still present, space is left for popular summertime activities to commence.
However, September is the perfect time to decorate for fall because the start of the school semester is often associated with the change of seasons, but typically it is still too warm in August. Universally, with the cooling weather and the exit of summer, September is the best month to decorate for the incoming fall season.
