Jackets are Better Than Sweatshirts

As the colder months draw nearer with every passing day, staying warm becomes the goal. Wearing outerwear such as hats, scarves, mittens and boots are all ways to help to fend off the cold while also adding to the look for the day. In addition, jackets, coats, sweaters and sweatshirts are common staples in one’s winter wardrobe, with each of them offering a different element to the outfit. However, when it comes to choosing between a jacket and a sweatshirt, jackets are the way to go. Although sweatshirts are comfortable and convenient, jackets offer more versatility, functionality and style, making them the superior fashion choice for the colder months.

Indeed, sweatshirts do have their advantages, as they require little thought in terms of styling: one can throw on a sweatshirt with a pair of jeans or sweatpants, and the outfit is practically done. Meanwhile, jackets require more consideration about how it works with the rest of an outfit. Also, sweatshirts are undeniably comfortable, as most are made of soft and cozy material.

Jackets can be comfortable too, though, and they offer something that sweatshirts cannot: versatility. One of the biggest advantages of a jacket is that it can complement an outfit rather than completely cover it up. While a sweatshirt is often the final layer of an outfit, hiding what’s underneath, jackets can be left open, which allows the rest of the outfit to remain visible while also adding another detail to one’s look. For someone who spent a lot of time picking out an outfit but then realized it wasn’t warm enough to wear by itself, pairing the outfit with a jacket would allow the outfit to be seen and appreciated.

Furthermore, while sweatshirts are limited in their ability to be in different styles, there are jackets for every occasion. From fleeces and windbreakers to rain jackets and leather jackets, there exists a huge variety that can suit all needs. Jackets also come in different lengths, such as cropped jackets or long coats, giving people even more options when putting together an outfit. This contrasts heavily with sweatshirts, as they tend to stick to one form: a long sleeved piece of clothing.

“Jackets have a lot more variety,” math teacher John Gussaroff said. “There’s jackets for fall weather; there’s jackets for a chill spring day. There’s coats for the winter: long coats, short coats, leather, camel hair, wool and fleece.”

With so many different styles, materials and lengths available, jackets can be a part of the outfit itself, not to mention their remarkable functionality: jackets have pockets, more so than sweatshirts. Jackets often provide more substantial storage options, as some come with inner pockets in addition to the common two pockets in the front. Jackets are also much easier to put on and take off. Instead of pulling a sweatshirt off and potentially ruining one’s hairstyle in the process, a jacket can simply be unzipped and taken off without a hassle. This also makes it much easier to adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day: one might zip up their jacket when outside but then unzip it and take it off when entering a heated classroom.

“Jackets you can take off more easily than sweatshirts,” senior Sadie Bowersox said. “I feel like they’re much warmer than an actual sweatshirt because of the material. You can also take it off if you get too hot.”

Ultimately, jackets are more advantageous to wear than sweatshirts, as jackets are versatile, have a wider variety of styling options and provide more functionality. So, as the temperatures drop and winter approaches, zip up and wear a jacket.
