Maclay Reveals 2026 Prom Dance Theme

On Monday, March 2, Maclay’s Upper School revealed this year’s prom theme: “A Night in Disguise.” This theme centers around a masquerade-like aesthetic, and guests are even encouraged to wear a masquerade mask along with their usual dance attire.

The word prom is short for promenade, which is defined as the formal introductory parading of guests at a party. Prom’s origins can be traced back to debutante balls in the 18th century. These balls were held when a woman reached a certain age, typically between 16 and 18 years old, and were intended to represent their formal debut into society.

Prom started to become popular around the 20th century, and was formally implemented by high schools during the 1920s. The goal was to introduce young women and men to cultural norms of society. Later, in the 1950s, companies began marketing specific prom products such as dresses and tuxedos. Subsequently, proms started to become common in high schools as an end-of-year event.

Maclay’s prom follows this format, as it will be held in the last quarter of the school year on March 28, at the FSU Alumni Center. Upper School students are looking forward to celebrating this evening of mystery and magic. Tickets can be purchased here: A Night in Disguise.
