A Witty Special
Sabrina Carpenter’s Nonsense Christmas Special
Sabrina Carpenter, an American singer-songwriter, recently wrapped up the North American leg of her “Short n’ Sweet Tour” with 33 sold-out shows. Recently, the pop star was featured in “A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter,” available to stream on Netflix on Dec. 6. The holiday special includes a witty monologue, several celebrity guest stars and musical performances. The show quickly took Netflix's spot as number one in TV shows today. After watching the skit, it is obvious Carpenter is downright hilarious. The special has several features resembling Saturday Night Live (SNL) skits throughout the monologue. Two of the writers, Jimmy Fowlie and Fran Gillespie, are writers for SNL.
The Christmas special opens with Carpenter singing one of her songs “Buy Me Presents” while wearing a fabulous red dress with black gloves. She then sings a song called “It’s the Most Nonsense Time of the Year,” where viewers see the first of many jokes Carpenter cracks. Throughout the song, she teases that Netflix gave her an unlimited budget, so she can do whatever she wishes and proceeds to smash a giant candy cane into a crew member. The Christmas house in the set is decked out in holiday decor. The set also includes a fire lit, adding to the cozy and festive vibe.
Several guest stars also appear in the film, the first being Tyla. The pair performs “This Christmas” in perfect harmony. A running joke throughout the movie is Carpenter’s infamous “Nonsense” outros. These outros are a fun and creative way to differentiate specific cities on tour. Cara Delevingne, a model and actress, appears as a guest star and attempts Carpenter’s dirty outros, which were a huge factor of Carpenter’s quick rise to fame. A bittersweet element of the production is childhood videos of Carpenter and her family during Christmas time, projected in the background while Carpenter sings “Santa Doesn’t Know You Like I Do.”
A notable fan-favorite segment is the collaboration with singer Chappell Roan. The two sing “Last Christmas,” and their vocals blend effortlessly together. Wearing gorgeously bedazzled emerald sets and white fur coats, the pair looks angelic during their performance.
To wrap up the film, Carpenter sings “A Nonsense Christmas” from her “Fruitcake” album. Overall, the film is festive, creative and fun. It is definitely a must-watch if you are looking for a good laugh.
