In mid-March, when the air starts to get warmer and schools are off for a week-long spring break, most people default to a sunny vacation, at the beach or on a cruise. After the long winter season, many of us are ready to soak up the sun and get a tan. But when keeping an open-mind, there are various overlooked pros to extending the winter and choosing a colder destination for a spring break vacation.

Naturally, most people gravitate towards going to the popular warm-weather spring break destinations, including various spots in Florida, deemed the sunshine state for a reason. Since many popular destinations have warm weather, cold vacation spots like ski resorts or mountains will be less crowded during the spring.

Most people are used to the same old vacations over spring break, so travelling to a less traditional, colder destination is a fresh change of scenery, perfect for making new and different memories. Additionally, it’s convenient and often more affordable to travel somewhere cold. Since warm vacation spots are higher in demand, the prices of cold destinations, such as airfare and hotel stays that skyrocket for the popular warm-weather vacation spots, will be cheaper.

Many of the world’s gems are located in cold places. Going somewhere cold for spring break will lead to experiencing unique activities, as it’s not the common choice for this time of year. For example, seeing the Northern Lights in Finland or heading to the ski slopes all around Colorado make for a unique experience in the spring. It’s nice to have some variation for the break, rather than just going to the beach again, because it opens our eyes to new, unique experiences.

Some may argue that going to a cold place for spring break defeats the purpose of the occasion, and that it is best to go somewhere warm and embrace the traditional spring season. While there is value in embracing the warm weather, there are various positives to a cold vacation destination, as it brings a unique experience from the norm and creates an exciting way to spend spring break.

People should stay open-minded about choosing a spring break destination and not limit themselves to a warm vacation spot. At least once, take a vacation to a cold destination over spring break. Step out of the typical, more popular bounds, trade bathing suits for jackets and sweaters and try something new this spring.
