Vogue Met Gala Theme “Costume Art” Announced

The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) Gala is one of the most exclusive events of the year, and has served as the annual fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute for decades. The event started in 1948 as a simple charity dinner, and it evolved in the 1970s under Vogue editor Diana Vreeland into the celebrity centered and extravagant spectacle known today. Each year’s theme corresponds to the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, encouraging attendees to interpret the costume through high fashion, and often experimental designs. 

“The Met Gala always sets trends for the fashion world, and next year’s theme is definitely going to inspire conversation and creativity,” freshman Trisha Patel said. 

Now, Vogue magazine and the Met have officially announced the theme “Costume Art” for the 2026 Met Gala, releasing it on Nov. 17 in a feature article released by Vogue. The event will take place on Monday, May 4, 2026, and will continue its tradition as one of the most influential nights for fashion. 

Based on past themes and information that the Met and Vogue has given about next year's theme, guests will likely use bold, imaginative designs for the 2026 concept, balancing literal aspects of the theme with more abstract and artistic looks. With vogue and the Met setting the tone, next year’s Gala is expected to deliver memorable looks that continue the event's tradition of creativity.

“Next year’s theme of Costume Art is very broad,” Patel said. “This will give both guests and designers the freedom to interpret it in many fun and exciting ways.” 

Past themes have included “About Time: Fashion and Duration” (2020), and “China: Through the Looking Glass” (2015) and “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” (2022). Big-name designers and celebrities often collaborate months in advance, creating looks that make bold artistic statements while reflecting the exhibition’s creative direction. Over the years, the carpet has displayed innovation, symbolism and cultural and societal commentary. With the 2026 theme now revealed, expectations are high that this year’s Gala will continue to impress audiences around the world. 

“The Met Gala is one of the most influential nights in fashion,” Patel said. “It will be amazing to see how this year’s theme plays out on the carpet.”
