There have been more than 6,000 wildfires in California in 2024, which have caused about one million acres to be burned. The area burned is about 15 times the size of Tallahassee. This is a 290% increase in area burned from 2023 statistics, when wildfires only burned about 250,000 acres of land in California.
These fires have expanded extremely fast. As they move towards major cities like Los Angeles, thousands of residents are being forced to evacuate.
The 2024 California wildfires are mostly caused by climate change, while others were caused by humans. The state had its warmest summer yet this year, leaving no moisture in the fields. This made conditions perfect for the spread of wildfires.
California is receiving federal assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to contain the fires.
“California is battling multiple fast-moving wildfires in rugged locations in Southern California,”
Governor of California Gavin Newsom said. “I’m thankful for the support the Biden-Harris Administration is providing to firefighter teams working round the clock to contain these challenging fires and safeguard the lives and property of Californians.”
