In the month of December, various Maclay clubs took part in a holiday initiative. To support children in foster care, students shopped for local Guardian ad Litem organizations’ December toy drive program. Guardian ad Litem is an organization that includes an attorney, a child welfare professional and volunteers from the community who come together to make sure every foster child has a safe and loving home.
On Friday, Dec. 6, middle school students in Maclay Junior Beta Club went to Walmart to purchase their gifts. On Monday, Dec. 9, upper school students in Key Club and student council traveled to Walmart. On these trips, Maclay students bought a variety of gifts for the foster kids, including toys, books, crafts, blankets, sports equipment and blankets. By buying and donating gifts for Guardian ad Litem, Maclay students helped make sure that children in foster care have presents under the tree this year.
“I think it’s important to give back to the community so everyone can have a wonderful time during the holidays,” eighth-grader Raquel Gonzalez Loumiet said. “I felt very grateful that I had the opportunity to shop for people who don’t have the means to celebrate Christmas.”
