On March 20, 2026, the world was starstruck by the release of “Project Hail Mary.” On the surface, the film appeared to be a book adaptation of Andy Weir’s bestselling novel by the same name. However, the film is more than just the average book adaptation: it is proof that movies don’t have to be part of a franchise to be worth seeing in theatres.

Over the past few years, the theatre industry has seen a major loss in sales. Ticket prices have increased, and many people have begun to watch movies at their homes rather than at theatres. In addition, a majority of movies being produced were by the same few companies, and most films were related to prior films. As a whole, the movie industry seemed to be losing the creative spark it once had, until the release of “Project Hail Mary.”

“Project Hail Mary” shattered multiple records upon its first two weeks in theatres, being Amazon MGM Studio's highest grossing production and for having the best opening weekend out of any film in 2026. The film itself is an emotionally resonant science fiction film that manages to balance hard science with heartfelt storytelling. The movie follows Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Throughout the movie, his memories gradually return, and he realizes he is humanity’s last hope to stop a mysterious threat that is slowly dimming the sun.

“Project Hail Mary” is an astounding film that weaves technical challenges into a deeply personal journey. The movie constantly shifts between Grace’s present situation on the spacecraft and flashbacks to Earth, keeping the audience engaged while gradually revealing the scale of the threat. Each revelation feels earned, building tension not through spectacle alone but through the weight of responsibility resting on one reluctant hero. Throughout the film, we watch as Grace begins to find the heroism in himself that he never thought he had. Grace’s inspirational journey is not just about saving Earth but about connection, trust, and sacrifice. The relationships he forms under the most unusual circumstance of being in outer space feel deep and personal and enhance the film’s message.

Visually,“Project Hail Mary” is stunning. The spacecraft where a majority of the film takes place feels lived-in and functional, while the depiction of space strikes a balance between beauty and isolation. The entire depiction of space is enhancing, making the viewer feel like they are in space with Grace. The special effects serve the narrative rather than overshadow it, particularly in scenes involving scientific experimentation and the vastness of space.

One minor criticism of the film lies in the occasional exposition-heavy dialogue. At times, characters explain concepts a bit too directly, which may feel redundant for viewers already following the science. However, this is a minor issue and arguably is necessary to keep the story accessible to a wide audience.

Overall, “Project Hail Mary” is a thoughtful, engaging and emotionally satisfying sci-fi film that stands out among recent movies. It successfully combines scientific ideas with genuine emotion, delivering a story that is as inspiring as it is entertaining. The film is impactful and visually stunning, and is a great reason to show up to theatres.
