The National Football League (NFL) community mourns the death of 24-year-old defensive end Marshawn Kneeland of the Dallas Cowboys who died early Thursday morning in Frisco, Texas.

According to authorities, Kneeland was involved in a police chase after failing to stop for a traffic violation on Wednesday night. His vehicle was found crashed, and he later fled on foot. During the search, dispatchers said he had sent a group text that said “goodbye” to friends, displaying suicidal intention. He was later found with what looked like a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Cowboys released a statement calling Kneeland a “beloved teammate” and extending their condolences to his friends and family.

Kneeland, a second-round draft pick in 2024 from Western Michigan University, had just scored his first NFL touchdown on a blocked punt recovery just days before his death.
