The Maclay upper school is not just a place for previous Maclay middle schoolers, they welcome middle schoolers from anywhere. A method that Maclay uses to get these middle schoolers interested in their school is having their annual Discovery Day which was hosted on Nov. 1, 2023. The Maclay student ambassador program helped bring this event to life with student mentors showing the eighth graders what a day in the life of a Maclay high schooler looked like along with some fellow students explaining to their parents everything that Maclay has to offer.
The day started around 10:15 a.m. for the Discovery Day students. The eighth graders started in Langford Hall where they heard information about the upper school and met with their student ambassador who would be taking them around campus. Once they were paired up, they were able to see what a class period was like in the upper school.
“I think it’s really good that kids are able to come and see what highschool is like at Maclay,” student ambassador Lainey Ford said. “It gives them a better insight and more involved experience.”
After the class period was over, the shadows got to experience a Maclay upper school break and then got taken on a tour of the upper school by their student ambassador. Once everything was finished, they got to the “inside scoop” of the Maclay upper school. Anything the student had questions on were answered during this time and the student ambassadors got the chance to tell the middle schoolers other additional details they felt were essential to know before entering high school.
While the Discovery Day students were learning all about the Maclay upper school, their parents also needed to come in around 12:15 p.m. to gain more knowledge about Maclay. Any questions they had, the student ambassadors were able to answer for them. After everything was asked and answered, the parents were taken on a campus tour so that they would also get to know the campus like their children.
“I really liked meeting all the new parents,” student ambassador Parker Lambert said. “They were actually really, really nice and they had a lot of questions to ask and I am excited for them to have their students come experience Maclay because I love it. This is my second year here, so it was overall a really good experience.”
The day ended around 1:45 p.m. for both the students and parents. At the end of the day, the middle school students got the extraordinary opportunity of getting a deeper look into how a high school operates, and what to expect in the upcoming years.
“I think it’s good for new students to come and see Maclay,” senior Ava Duke said. “I had one student shadow in my homeroom and she really got to see our classroom dynamic which I think is a good thing to know when searching for a new school.”
