Olivia Rodrigo’s new single, “Serena Joy,” was released on Aug. 24, 2026. The song is based on the character Serena Joy from Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which focuses on women's rights, women losing control over their own lives and the expectations that are placed on them. Joy’s character initially supports the system that takes away women’s rights, but those choices ultimately come back to harm her. Olivia Rodrigo wrote this song to share her feelings about these issues and how women should have the right to make their own decisions.

“Serena Joy” is different from her other songs on albums like “SOUR” and “GUTS,” which are mainly about relationships and breakups. This song is more serious and political compared to others she has released, but it is still similar because she also sings about her feelings and emotions to get her point across. Rodrigo continues to use her platform to highlight women’s issues, recently hosting the Daisy Chain Festival, an all-women’s festival focused on empowerment.
