Lindsey Vonn’s Tragic Crash During The 2026 Olympics

On Feb. 8, 2026, American ski legend Lindsey Vonn suffered a crash early in the Alpine Skiing Women's Downhill competition of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Vonn came out of retirement in 2024 to compete in the 2026 Olympics, and was expected to be a dominant force in the event. However, about 13 seconds into a run, she clipped a gate and was thrown off balance. Tumbling out of control, Vonn suffered a fracture of the left tibia, adding onto an already-torn ACL. She was quickly sent to a hospital in Italy and underwent four different surgeries before returning home.
In a social media update, Vonn documented her medical evacuation, saying “my leg is still in pieces.. but I’m finally HOME!” She has expressed gratitude towards the Italian medical staff while acknowledging the long road ahead. Beyond the injury, Vonn announced the heartbreaking loss of her longtime dog Leo, who died the day after her Olympic crash, another crushing blow amidst her current injury.
Through all her current troubles, Vonn has stated that she has no regrets about competing, and is grateful for all the support she has received, becoming an international symbol of bravery and resilience.
