Snapchat Memories Locked Behind a Paywall

Since its launch in 2011, Snapchat has operated as a photo-sharing app known for its disappearing messages and photos. However, as of Sept. 26, the platform has announced that Memories, photos and videos saved over the years, that exceed five gigabytes (GB) of storage will require payment.
This means users who have stored thousands of content risk losing access unless they subscribe to the new Memories Storage Plans. Introductory storage plans will offer 100 GB, 250 GB with Snapchat+ or 5 TB with SnapchatPremium. Another alternative is exporting and downloading the data, which can span tens of gigabytes, but that option requires sufficient device storage. Users will have 12 months of temporary access to memories that exceed the 5 GB limit.
Many users say the Snapchat Memories they’ve stored are meaningful, capturing moments with deceased loved ones, treasured friends and significant life experiences. The idea of losing them has sparked frustration, as many cannot afford to pay for additional Snapchat or device storage.
The change has faced widespread backlash, with users across social media dubbing it “corporate greed.” Prior to Sept. 26, keeping Snapchat Memories had always been free, which is why users trusted the app to store their photos. Had they known access would be restricted in the future, some may have captured these photos on their camera roll instead. In protest, some users are deleting the app entirely.
