At 16 years old, New Zealand runner Sam Ruthe made history by running a 3:48.88 mile, becoming the fastest under-18 mile ever.

Ruthe set the mark at the  John Thomas Terrier Classic, competing against older collegiate and professional athletes. His time broke a longstanding New Zealand national record and lowered the world best for runners under 18.

The time is the latest milestone in Ruthe’s rapid rise. Earlier this year, he became the youngest athlete to run a mile time below four minutes, a benchmark considered a defining achievement in middle-distance running.

Track officials and analysts say Ruthe’s composure and finishing speed stand out, especially given his age. His performance has caused speculation about his future at major international competitions, as attention continues to build around one of the sport’s most promising young talents. The race was held indoors before a large and highly competitive field.
