The First Three MLB Games of the 2026 Season

The 2026 MLB season opened with three close games with each staying tight until the last few innings, setting the tone for the rest of the season. These close scores show how evenly matched the teams were right from the beginning. This MLB season is off to a solid start and is already action-packed and competitive.
The first game of the season was on Wednesday, March 25. The New York Yankees won their game against the San Francisco Giants for opening night with a final score of 7-0. The Yankees took control early, as their pitching stopped the Giants lineup. On the other side, the Giants struggled with their offense, scoring no runs. Yankees outfielder, Aaron Judge, went hitless and struck out four times for the first time in almost two years. Tony Vitello debuted his career as the manager for the Giants after moving from the University of Tennessee to the MLB. Overall, the game was a strong opening performance for the Yankees and a rough start for the Giants.
Next, the Pittsburgh Pirates played the New York Mets for the second game of the season on Thursday, March 26. The Mets took care of the Pirates, winning 11-7. During the first inning, third baseman for the Mets, Brett Baty, delivered a bases-clearing three-run triple. Mets outfielder, Carson Benge, hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to start his major league debut. Immediately after, catcher Francisco Alvarez hit a solo shot, putting the Mets above the Pirates by six runs, making the score 11-7. On the Pirates side, second baseman Brandon Lowe, hit two home runs and three RBIs, making up most of the Pirates' score. Mets pitcher, Freddy Peralta, started his season by striking out seven batters within the span of five innings. The Mets’ consistent scoring and pitching gave them the win, despite a strong effort from the Pirates.
Finally, the Washington Nationals played the Chicago Cubs for the third game of the 2026 season. The Nationals took care of business and won 10-4. Nationals’ left fielder, Joey Wiemer started off strong and went three for three in his at-bats, which included a solo home run to start the scoring. Third baseman for the Nationals, Brady House, put the cherry on top with a two run homer in the ninth inning while also managing to secure a highlight reel worthy play at third base. Nationals pitcher, Brad Lord, was a big help in securing the win with his pitching throughout the night, unlike Cubs pitcher, Matthew Boyd, who took a tough loss after giving up six runs in only 3.2 innings. The Nationals' dominant Opening Day performance proved they could rely on both their new additions and rising prospects to beat the Cubs.
The 2026 MLB season started off with high-stakes and competitive matchups that immediately set a tone for the rest of the season. The season began with a 7-0 shutout by the Yankees over the Giants. This momentum carried into March 26, as the Mets utilized an explosive five-run first inning to secure an 11-7 victory over the Pirates. Lastly, the Nationals showcased their skills in a 10-4 win against the Cubs, driven by Wiemer’s perfect three-for-three performance and a late-inning home run by House. Collectively, these opening performances created high expectations for the 2026 MLB season.
