On Tuesday, Oct. 24, both varsity boys and girls Marauder golf teams competed in districts against many different teams at the Hilaman Golf Course in Tallahassee. Both teams came home winning districts.
Senior Ellie Jane Riner is a key player for the Marauders girls golf team. Not only did they win the district meet as a team, but Riner also came in first overall, being the individual district camp for girls. The Lady Marauders played against the Florida High Seminoles and the Franklin County Seahawks.
“I wish I could have played better,” Riner said.
There are five boys on the boy’s golf team. The boy’s team played against the Florida High Seminoles, Marianna Bulldogs, Aucilla Christian Warriors, Bozeman Bucks, North Bay Haven Buccaneers, Port St. Joe Sharks and the Community Christian Chargers. The boy Marauders’ overall score was 315, coming in first place.
Par for the Hilaman course is 72. Riner shot a 75 for the girls. In second place for the girls, freshman Lily Smith came in second shooting an 86 and junior McClaine Ulrich shot a 91, coming in third place. Eighth grader Reece Erwin and freshman Tessa Cooper came in fourth and fifth on the leaderboard for Maclay.
For the Maclay boys, sophomore Jack Cook shot a 75, coming in first for the boys. Although the Marauders came in first as a team, senior PJ Cowhey from the Florida High Seminoles came in first as a district champ for the Seminoles, shooting a 74. Sophomore Hayden Chaires came in second for the Marauders shooting a 77 and senior Zachary Lowe shot an 81 coming in third. Placing fourth and fifth for the Marauders on the leaderboard were seniors Alejandro Oritz and Jacob Parrish.
“[I could have done better] on par threes,” Cook said. “I was five over through the par threes and two under through par fours and par fives.”
The head golf coach for the Lady Marauders is Cindy Stockstill and the head golf coach for the Maclay boy golfers is Joe Kupiszewski.
“They didn't start off really well and we kind of held on enough and kept it together long enough to seek out a two stroke victory and win districts so that was really exciting,” Kupiszewski said. “The end result is what is most important but certainly everybody had their share of struggles but that was good they preserved and came through in the end.”
Both the girl’s and boy’s teams will be heading to Regionals on Monday, Oct. 30.
