A Lasting Legacy
Feminist Icon Gloria Steinem Passes Away at the Age of 92

Feminist leader, journalist and activist Gloria Steinem died on Sept. 2, 2026, at the age of 92. Born in Toledo, Ohio in 1934, Steinem grew to become one of the most influential leaders of feminism, specifically the second-wave feminist movement that gained momentum during the 1960s and 1970s.
After graduating magna cum laude from Smith College, she began her career as a journalist. At the time, women in journalism were limited to lifestyle and women’s pages reporting, but Steinem advocated for more and began to write political stories. She became well-known for writing a piece about working conditions at Playboy Club, having gone undercover as an employee. She later co-founded “Ms.” magazine, creating a platform to discuss women’s rights and inequality.
