On Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Marauders had one goal in mind: to sweep North Florida Christian (NFC). With this game being the last time the seniors played a regular season game in Webster Gym, Maclay achieved their goal, leaving everything on the court and securing a 51-49 victory.
“Our goal was to stay strong, limit the turnovers and be aggressive on both ends of the court throughout the whole game,” senior Andrew Lunt said. “We all knew we needed to win on our senior night, so we had that expectation going into the game and we got the job done.”
While Maclay went into halftime with the lead, NFC began to battle back and even took a six-point lead in the fourth quarter. However, a late layup to take a two-point lead from sophomore Beau Beshears and NFC’s two missed three-point shots in the final 10 seconds secured the win for the Marauders.
“Our mindset throughout the game was to keep playing,” senior Davis Malone said. “We faced a deficit of six in the fourth quarter and kept playing hard which led to our comeback victory. Any victory against the team across the street is always a good victory.”
The team looks to carry their momentum with them into their game against St. John Paul II on Friday, Jan. 31 and into the playoffs.
