On Tuesday, April 8 the boys and girls track and field team had their last regular season meet and celebrated their seniors. They celebrated their 11 seniors after every event finished with a fun relay race, the big head race and then finally their senior walk.
The girls knocked out the competition, winning eight out of nine of their races, while the boys won one of their races. Junior Alana Wilson won the girls 100m, 200m and 400m and senior Payton Thumm won the 1600m. Maclay won the girls 4x100m, which included senior Elizabeth Dowdy, freshman Sarah Izeugbu, junior Priscilla Izeugbu and Wilson, with a time of 51.26, a second ahead of the next team.
“I think we did amazing [at the meet],” P. Izeugbu said. “I made sure we went through our dynamics, warmed up well so no one pulled anything and just came together and stretched.”
Maclay dominated the field events, starting with Dowdy taking first for girls pole vault with an easy 11 feet. Juniors Evan Starr and Gabe Manry both tied for first for boys pole vault with 9 feet. Senior Isabel Davis placed first for discus with a mark of 32.8m and senior Ana Cebollero won for javelin with 28.17m.
“My races were really easy,” Wilson said. “I used this meet as just a practice round and to get a workout in, everything was a breeze.”
The track and field team will have their next district meet on April 23, using the long break to practice and come back even stronger.
