On Aug. 27th, 2026, President Trump signed an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America. Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes and is on the borders of both America and Canada. This order was met with backlash from Americans and Canadians alike.

The name “Ontario” derives from the native Wendat word “Ontari’io,” which predates Canada’s establishment as a country. In New York, the only U.S. region that borders the lake, Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul released a statement about how the state will not be implementing the change.

“Canadians… know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now, and always,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said.

Trump’s order to rename the lake came amid a deterioration of trade agreements between the U.S and Canada, with Trump stating that Canada had been ripping off the United States for a long time. Following this, Trump claimed that the renaming of bodies of water may continue.

“We have a Gulf, and we have a lake," Trump said. "Now, all we need is an ocean. Maybe we'll have to change the name of the Atlantic and or the Pacific. Maybe we'll change them both."
