Donald Trump's Plans For New Mexico

Since President Donald Trump’s reelection, he has been invested in rebranding the United States; the Gulf of Mexico was renamed to the Gulf of America, and most recently, he signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America.
Now, Trump has set his sights on a U.S. state: New Mexico. Over Labor Day weekend, he posted over 100 times on social media, mainly on Truth Social, his own site. Eight of these posts were on renaming New Mexico to “New America,” with one showing the word Mexico crossed out of New Mexico on a map.
Many have pointed out that changing the name would require state approval, as their constitution explicitly states that “the name of this state is New Mexico.” New Mexico Governor Michelle Grisham even criticized Trump’s posts on Sunday and believes that the president is attempting to distract the public from underlying issues.
"It's been ours since before the United States existed," Grisham said. "What is up for debate? Who's showing up for working families? While the President tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, gas prices keep soaring. Americans are also spending more at the grocery store, losing access to health care and wondering if they'll ever be able to afford a home."
