Former President Jimmy Carter Passes Away at 100 Years Old

On Dec. 29, 2024, former president Jimmy Carter passed away due to natural causes and previously diagnosed cancer. In August 2015, Carter was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, a type of skin cancer. The melanoma began on his liver but later spread to his brain. In February 2023, he announced he was stopping medical interventions and moving to hospice care.

The funeral for Carter was held on Jan. 9, 2025. The day began with Carter’s casket leaving the United States Capitol and moving to the Washington National Cathedral. The funeral began at 10 a.m. and ended around 11 a.m. Many people close to Carter’s heart–including Steve Ford, Ted Mondale, Stu Eizenstat, Andrew Young, Jason and Joshua Carter and President Joe Biden–spoke in remembrance of him. With that, the U.S. Marine Orchestra and Armed Forces Choir performed the musical pieces.

When the funeral ended around 11 a.m., the casket and family headed to Joint Base Andrews board Special Air Mission 39. The plane landed at Lawson Army Airfield in Fort Moore, Ga. and then they traveled to Plains, Ga., Carter’s hometown, for him to be buried next to his late wife, Rosalynn Carter.
