Stepping Down From the Podium
International Football Star Lionel Messi Announces Retirement From Argentina’s National Team

On Monday, Aug. 31, Lionel Messi announced his retirement from the international football world. In an Instagram post published by the star himself, he officially declared his plans to step back from the Argentina national team.
Fondly known as football’s GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), Messi has played in six World Cups, winning the tournament in 2022 against France. In addition, he led Argentina to the 2026 final earlier this year. Currently, he holds the record for the most goals scored in World Cup history with 18 goals.
Beyond his many World Cup achievements, Messi has won eight Ballon d’Or awards since 2009. The Ballon d’Or is considered the most prestigious award in global football and is given to the best player over the previous season. Needless to say, Messi’s skill on the field is unmatched, as he is also the highest-scoring man in South American football history.
Earlier this summer, fans speculated that Messi would step down from international soccer after the World Cup ended, and those predictions have become a reality. Fans all over the world have expressed their gratitude for everything that Messi has contributed to the international playing field.
Messi will still play club football for Inter Miami, but with his retirement from Argentina’s national team, it is inevitable that his club football career will eventually end. For now, fans will continue to honor his international legacy and enjoy the time that Messi has left in the sport.
