2026 Winter Storm Causes Highest Period of Flight Cancelations

As the new year begins, a severely hazardous storm has arrived. This storm continues to affect the majority of the country, as millions of Americans have been impacted. With some states facing upwards of 20 inches of snow, the public is heavily encouraged to remain home for safety. Due to this, nearly 13 thousand flights have been delayed or canceled due to the extreme weather conditions.
Affecting mainly the US northeast, the storm has caused approximately 11,400 flights to be cancelled. It is so severe that New York’s LaGuardia airport closed on Jan. 25, and over 80% of flights were cancelled at JFK. Major airport hubs including Dallas-Fort Worth, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Atlanta were also heavily impacted.
Airlines have had extreme cancellation rates with American Airlines canceling 55% of flights and Delta cancelling 72%. Outside of the cancellations during the pandemic, this is the highest period of flight cancellations in America. The public hopes to see a change in weather soon, with meteorologists predicting that Jan. 31 will be the end of the icy temperatures.
