The popular late-night talk show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, returned to air on Sept. 23, 2025, following a three-night suspension. The show was suspended after Brenden Carr, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, threatened to take action against ABC over comments Kimmel made regarding Charlie Kirk’s death. Kimmel discussed both Trump’s response to Kirk's death and his own speculation about the killer’s identity.

“This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend,” Kimmel said. “This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.”

Disney, which owns ABC, gave a statement to USA TODAY, stating that they suspended the production due to the ill-timed and insensitive comments. They also stated that they had discussed the issue with Kimmel, and the show would resume. Many people were outraged at the show’s suspension and called it an attack on free speech. On the night his show returned, he reached 6.3 million viewers. He gave a monologue about free speech and signaled that he won’t restrain his temperament of the president as Trump openly supported removing his show.

“Our leader celebrates Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke,” Kimmel said.
