The popular fast food restaurant Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) announced on Feb. 18 that it is leaving its main headquarters in Louisville, Ky. KFC’s name and origin is directly related to Kentucky, as the chain started its first location at a hotel in a small Kentucky town in 1930. The fast food joint has grown to over 30,000 franchises located across 150 countries.
KFC’s parent company Yum! Brands is moving the headquarters along with hundreds of employees, to Plano, Texas, taking advantage of Texas’ business-friendly laws and the brand’s existing corporate offices. Yum! Brands owns Pizza Hut, and the two will be joining forces to create a combined headquarters. Kentucky government officials have expressed disappointment.
“This company’s name starts with Kentucky, and it has marketed our state’s heritage and culture in the sale of its product,” Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear said. “My hope is that the company will rethink moving Kentucky Fried Chicken employees out of Kentucky.”
